1. Academy description

The International Online Academy on “International Economic Law”, jointly hosted by the German-Southeast Asian Center of Excellence for Public Policy and Good Governance (CPG) at the Faculty of Law of Thammasat University, the Asian Governance Foundation (AGF), and Lorenz & Partners Co., Ltd. from 4-7 August 2020, is still open for application until 1 st of August 2020. The academy is a certificate course with six lectures on fundamentals and current developments of international economic law, with a focus put on the question what they mean for Thailand and how the country is dealing with them. Given by lecturers from the Faculty of Law of Thammasat University and lawyers from international business law firms in Thailand and China, the lectures cover a wide range of topics including:

  • international business- and commercial transactions,
  • the ongoing adoption of international trade law in Thailand,
  • the tension between international trade rules and national public health policies,
  • compliance in international trade, as well as
  • the international investment regime.

The academy addresses Thai law students and students of related fields who are interested in obtaining, updating and expanding knowledge in these topics.

2. Online application

4 Lecturer short bios (in order of appearance):

Michael Lorenz                                

founded in 1995 the law firm Lorenz & Partners Co., Ltd. in Bangkok, which since then has established further offices in Berlin, Ho Chi Minh City and Hong Kong. As the first German-speaking lawyer in Thailand, Michael Lorenz possesses broad experience in corporate, commercial and tax law as well as in the field of investment promotion in the region. He studied Law and Economics in Freiburg, Taipei, Vienna and Paris. After graduating, he worked as the Head of the Legal Department of the German-Thai Chamber of Commerce in Thailand.

Steffen Kohrt

joined Lorenz & Partners in 2014 and since then advises primarily corporate clients and has extensive experience in all matters relating to their investments in Thailand. He studied Law at the University of Hamburg, Germany. His legal training included positions at courts in Germany and reputable law firms in Thailand. He was admitted to the Bar at the Regional Court in Hamburg in 2014.

Pathaichit Eagjariyakorn

is Professor at the Faculty of Law of Thammasat University. He specializes on International Trade Law as well as on Commercial and Business Law with a focus on Commercial Maritime Law and regularly advises government agencies in these fields. Prof. Pathaichit received both his Master and PhD degree in law from Nantes University, France.

Jaruprapa Rakpong

is Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Law, Thammasat University. Her research interests include EU- and ‘ASEAN trade law as well as the WTO Law. She holds a Masters of Law from Cambridge University and a PhD degree in Law from University College London, UK.

Henry Chen

is Senior Partner at Dentons’ Shanghai office. Before joining Dentons, Henry Chen was AP Compliance Director of Ford Motor Company responsible for monitoring and managing compliance risks under various jurisdictions and conducting investigations and compliance reviews on unusual events. His practice areas include compliance with the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA) and Chinese anti-bribery law, anti-fraud investigations, data privacy and security, antimonopoly law, establishing compliance management system, and dispute resolution.

Nartnirun Junngam

is Associate Professor at the Faculty of Law of Thammasat University. His research areas cover Public International Law, International Investment Law, International Economic Law, and International Dispute Settlement. He obtained both his Master as wells as his PhD degree in law from Yale Law School.
